Active Independence Expands Creative Opportunities

Active Independence is excited to announce the expansion of its Art of Wellbeing program with new “Crafting Together, Upcycling for Good” workshops in Rotherham, alongside updates to its established crafting groups, Creative Threads and Artful Balance. These free, inclusive initiatives offer creative outlets and community connection for Disabled People, carers, and Personal Assistants.

Crafting Together, Upcycling for Good (Rotherham):

Starting February 19th, join us at Brecks Community Hub every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm for “Crafting Together, Upcycling for Good.” These workshops offer a fun and relaxed environment to learn new crafting skills, upcycle and repurpose items, make new friends, and boost wellbeing. Led by Maria, participants will explore a variety of activities, with a focus on upcycling and its positive environmental impact. All materials are provided, and refreshments will be served. Share your ideas and suggestions – everyone is welcome!

Creative Threads (Maltby):

Our Maltby Quilting and Knitting group has secured funding and continues under the new name Creative Threads! Join us every Tuesday from 11 am to 3 pm at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall, Maltby (S66 7NQ). These free, stress-free sessions offer a creative outlet and a chance to connect with others. Whether you prefer crafting independently or collaborating on projects, all skill levels are welcome. Knitting and crochet enthusiasts are encouraged to join. Sewing machines are available to book in advance. Creative Threads also offers pre-cut quilting packs and support for those wanting to try quilting. Finished quilts are donated to Project Linus – Rotherham Group, bringing comfort to children in need.

Artful Balance (Edenthorpe, Doncaster):

Our Art of Wellbeing program: Drop-In Group, has moved venues and is now Artful Balance! Join us fortnightly on Wednesdays from 2 -5pm  at Church Balk Gardens Hall, Edenthorpe, DN3 2NT. These free, stress-free sessions provide a creative outlet and a chance to connect with others. Led by Jacqui, Artful Balance offers a diverse range of accessible activities, including yoga, flower arranging, cooking demonstrations, painting, pottery, and guest speakers. The group also organizes day outings to places like garden centres, archery ranges, and barge trips. Members can attend the full session or drop in at their convenience. Family carers are welcome to stay or use the time as a respite.

All programs are free and designed for Disabled People, carers, and PAs. They provide a relaxed, warm, and accessible environment to chat, be creative, and combat isolation.
