“Understandable and down to earth!”

“Good atmosphere, really helped me to understand the issues”. This was some of the feedback from our “Employing A Personal Assistant” event held on Tuesday 15th of May.
Sadly Brian, our chair, was unable to attend so the event was opened by Barbara, secretary. After Barbara’s welcome speech, Angela Thompson from Skills For Care gave a speech explaining what the organisation does and what support it is able to offer individual employers.

Dawn Gibson then gave a heartfelt and inspiring talk about her experiences of going onto a Personal Budget and employing a PA and the incredible difference it has made to her life. Read it here PERSONAL ASSISTANCE AND ME

There were then two workshops:

  • Giving feedback on the  Skills for Care ‘helping people to employ their own PA’s’ toolkit personal_assistants_toolkit_WEB_v2
  • The basics of employer responsibilities – Jo Rirson facilitated a useful discussion, particularly looking at equality issues and corrected some misleading advice and information some participants had been given

The afternoon ended with a real insight into being a PA when Alex Finnegan gave a talk about her experiences moving from being a trained nurse to being a Personal Assistant and how it is the best thing she has ever done!
